Is a knowledgeable doctor must necessarily be a more successful one ? The Answer Is Relativity : --- Dr. Bibhash Chakravorty. Success is a relative term which is subjective and depends on an individual's mindset ! Without knowledge that doctor will treat you erroneously which could be dangerous and even fatal ! The first step of becoming a good doctor is knowledge and hands on experience, the latter one cannot be stressed enough ! A doctor with clinical and practical experience only but not much bookish knowledge is like a ship sailing on the sea without a radar while a doctor with bookish knowledge only but without practical experience is like, not to roam the seas at all ! Naturally the first case is more acceptable albeit both are undesirable ! A successful doctor who has roaring practice may not be a good one and a good doctor might not be successful enough, if your measure of success is monetary gain, of course ! Given a choice it's better to be good than successful ! On a holistic basis, a good doctor is more successful than only a successful doctor, irrespective of financial gains !!! Fame and name of a doctor should be taken with a pinch of salt because the persons who confer the same to him/her are laymen. Let me quote some lines of a litany by a great and good British doctor, Sir Robert Hutchison whose book on clinical methods we had to read and master in our medical school. For the guidance of medical posterity I have named this litany, The Medical Bible which is separate from the Hippocratic Oath. Some other lines of a poem appears below this Bible which might modify a doctor's temperament and empathy towards his patients, for the better ! The Medical Bible --------------------------------- ( Especially to those Doctors who are surgically minded ) 'From inability to leave well alone; From too much zeal for what is new and contempt for what is old; From putting knowledge before wisdom, Science before art, cleverness before common sense; From treating patients as cases; And from making the cure of a disease more grievous than its endurance, GOOD LORD, DELIVER US.' Sir Robert Hutchison ( 1871- 1960 ) President of the Royal College of Physicians and Consulting Physician to the London Hospital. You that seek what life is in death, Now find it air that once was breath, New names unknown, old names gone: Till time end bodies, but souls none. Reader ! then make time, while you be, But steps to your eternity. Baron Brooke Fulke Greville," Caelica 83 " Where there is patience and humility, there is neither anger nor vexation. -- Saint Francis of Assisi. Treat your patients as your God, they provide you with your bread and butter/luxuries too and not thinking yourself to be their God, as many doctors think themselves to be and feel and consider yourself lucky and blessed to be able to help and heal them ! The whole universe of medical fraternity revolves around your patient Gods !!! -- Dr. Bibhash Chakravorty. Below : Albert Einstein, theory of general relativity !
